My mother flew to Europe for 30 days and left 11-year-old me home alone with $20, practically no food, and one strict warning: “Don’t call my fiancé and ruin this trip.” I survived by rationing cheap bread, sleeping against the front door, and logging every meal, every terrifying noise, and every phone call she ignored. When she finally returned, tan and glowing, she found my notebook, 64 cents, and a court order sitting on the kitchen island. Her souvenir bags slipped from her hands. “No,” she gasped. “This can’t be happening.” My name is Maya, and I was 11 when my childhood abruptly ended with a crumpled $20 bill. It happened on the first morning of summer vacation in our Chicago suburb. My mother, Evelyn, stood in our foyer wearing oversized sunglasses even though we were indoors. Beside her sat two massive suitcases, a leather carry-on, and a wide-brimmed hat she had bought specifically for taking photos in Santorini. Her fiancé, David, had already stepped outside to make sure the Uber driver had enough room in the trunk. They were supposed to spend 30 days traveling through France, Italy, and Greece before their wedding. I had known about the trip for months. What I hadn’t known was that I wasn’t staying with anyone while they were gone. “Chloe’s dad is picking me up soon, right?” I asked. Chloe was my best friend. Her family owned a summer cabin up in Wisconsin, and Mom had told David I would be spending the month up there. Mom glanced nervously toward the open front door. Then she reached into her designer purse and pressed a folded bill into my palm. “No.” I looked down. It was a twenty-dollar bill. “What do you mean, no?” “Chloe’s parents changed their plans.” “When?” “A few days ago.” “Then where am I staying?” “Here.” I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh and tell me she was joking. She didn’t. “By myself?” “You’re 11, Maya. You’re very mature for your age.” “For a whole month?” “Stop being dramatic. There’s food in the pantry, and you know how to work the microwave.” I unfolded the bill. “Is this for emergencies?” “It’s for whatever you need.” “For 30 days?” Her jaw tightened. “You should be grateful. When I was your age, I didn’t get spending money.” “This isn’t spending money if I have to buy my own food.” “Lower your voice.” “I’m not yelling.” “You’re starting to.” Outside, David slammed the trunk of the SUV. Mom crouched down in front of me, but there was absolutely nothing comforting about it. Her eyes kept darting toward the door. “Listen to me carefully. David thinks you’re going up to the cabin because I didn’t want him stressing out. You are not going to ruin this trip by calling him and making a scene.” “Does anyone even know I’m staying here?” “You know Mrs. Higgins next door.” “She’s in Florida visiting her daughter.” Mom hesitated. “Then call 911 if the house catches on fire.” “What if something else happens?” “Nothing is going to happen.” “What if I get sick?” “You won’t.” “What if somebody tries to break in?” “Maya, enough.” She stood up and smoothed out the front of her linen dress. The front door swung open wider. David leaned his head inside. “The driver says we need to hit the road now to beat the O’Hare traffic.” Then he smiled warmly at me. “Have fun in Wisconsin, kiddo. Send us pictures of the lake!” I looked at my mother. She shot me a dark, warning glare. That was the exact moment I could have told him. I could have said, “There is no cabin. She’s leaving me here.” But I had spent my entire life learning what happened when I embarrassed my mother. She would deny it all. She would say I had misunderstood the itinerary. She would smile at David and explain that I had an active imagination when I wanted attention. Then, when we were finally alone, she would punish me for humiliating her. So I kept my mouth shut. David carried the last bag outside. Mom followed him, then paused in the doorway. “See?” she said with a bright, fake smile. “You’re Miss Independent now.” She kissed two fingers and pressed them firmly against my forehead. Then she left. The suitcase wheels rattled down the concrete driveway. The car doors slammed. The engine revved. I watched through the front window until the taillights disappeared around the corner. For several minutes, I just stood in the foyer with the $20 clutched in my sweaty hand. “I’ll be fine,” I whispered to myself. The empty house gave no reply. I walked into the kitchen and pulled open the refrigerator. There was half a gallon of milk that smelled sour, three eggs, a jar of dill pickles, and a plastic container of takeout noodles with gray fuzz growing on one side. The freezer held an open bag of ice and an empty waffle box someone had put back. The pantry was even worse. I found a dented can of tuna, a can of creamed corn, four packets of maple instant oatmeal, and half a sleeve of stale saltines. That was when the pure panic set in. My mother hadn’t forgotten to make arrangements. She had deliberately abandoned me. On Day 1, I ate one egg for lunch and a packet of oatmeal for dinner. I used the kitchen landline to call Mom’s cell phone seven times. Every single call went straight to voicemail. On the eighth try, I left a message. “Mom, I checked the kitchen. There isn’t enough food. Please call me back.” She didn’t. That evening, her very first vacation photo popped up on the iPad we shared. She and David were sitting in a VIP airport lounge, clinking glasses of champagne. The caption read: Finally kicking off our perfect adventure! I left a comment underneath it. Please call me. The comment vanished ten minutes later. Mom had deleted it. On Day 2, I walked almost two miles in the Illinois summer heat to a gas station, with the $20 folded and tucked inside my shoe. I bought a loaf of white bread, a small jar of peanut butter, four bananas, two cans of chicken noodle soup, and a bottle of water. The total came to $19.36. The cashier handed me the receipt and 64 cents in change. “Having a big picnic?” she asked. I nodded quickly. “My mom’s waiting out in the car.” There was no car. I hugged the grocery bag against my chest the whole walk home, terrified the thin plastic handles would snap. That afternoon, I mapped out my portions. If I only ate two slices of bread a day, the loaf would last a little over a week. If I scraped the peanut butter thin enough, it might last longer. I wrote the math down in a spiral notebook leftover from the school year. At first, it was just a food schedule. Then, it turned into something else. Day 2: Spent $19.36. I have 64 cents left. Mom did not call. Day 3: Ate 2 crackers, 1 banana, and 1 slice of bread with peanut butter. Heard something hit the kitchen window at 11:14 p.m. Day 4: Slept on the living room couch because upstairs feels too far from the front door. Called Mom 5 times. No answer. Day 5: Finished the eggs. The milk is completely rotten. I am too scared to take the trash to the curb because a neighbor might realize I am home alone. Every single night, I wedged a heavy wooden dining chair under the front doorknob. I kept a sharp kitchen knife on the coffee table beside the couch, even though I knew deep down I probably couldn’t use it. The house made noises I had never tuned into before. Pipes groaned deep inside the drywall. Floorboards settled and creaked upstairs. The oak tree branches scraped against the siding. One night, I became absolutely convinced I could hear someone breathing on the other side of the back patio door. I huddled behind the kitchen island for an hour before I gathered the courage to peek out. Nobody was there. On Day 5, I called Chloe’s house. Her mother, Sarah, picked up. “Maya? Is everything okay, sweetie?” “Can I talk to Chloe?” “She’s in Colorado visiting her grandparents. She left with her dad three days ago.” My stomach dropped into my shoes. “Colorado?” “Yeah. She’ll be out there for two weeks. I stayed behind for work.” “I thought you guys were going up to the cabin.” “Oh, no, the Wisconsin cabin is closed for roof repairs all summer.” Mom hadn’t picked Chloe’s family out of a hat. She knew Chloe would be out of state. She knew the cabin would be vacant. She used them as her alibi because she calculated that no one would ever double-check. Sarah kept talking. “I thought you were off traveling somewhere, too.” “I am.” “Where are you calling from?” I looked around my dead, quiet kitchen. “At home.” “Is Evelyn there with you?” Panic seized me. Mom had warned me not to make a scene. “I have to go.” “Maya, wait—” I slammed the phone down. At 8:12 the next morning, heavy knocks rattled the front door. I had been sleeping on the couch. The noise sent me scrambling up the stairs on all fours. “Maya?” a woman’s voice called out. I recognized Sarah’s voice, but I was way too paralyzed by fear to answer. She knocked a few more times. Then I heard her footsteps crunching through the mulch, walking around the side of the house. I hid inside Mom’s master bathroom until I finally heard her car back out of the driveway. When I crept downstairs hours later, I found footprints in the dirt beneath the kitchen window. There were also three distinct smudges on the glass, as if someone had cupped their hands over their eyes to peer inside. Even though I knew it was Sarah, fear warped my logic. What if it was a burglar mimicking her voice? What if she had brought the police? What if Mom found out I had blown her cover? I locked myself in the downstairs half-bath and dialed Mom’s number. This time, the call connected. Accordion music and loud chatter filled the background. “Maya?” she answered, sounding annoyed. “Why do you keep blowing up my phone?” Just hearing her voice made hot tears spill down my cheeks. “Someone was outside.” “What?” “There are footprints by the kitchen window.” “It was probably just an Amazon driver.” “We didn’t order anything.” “Then it was a meter reader.” “At night?” She let out a long, dramatic sigh. “You’re just working yourself up.” “When are you coming home?” “You know exactly when.” “There isn’t enough food here, Mom.” “What did you do with the cash?” “I bought food.” “You blew through all of it already?” “It was twenty dollars!” “Then dig through the pantry.” “I did!” “Be resourceful, Maya.” My knuckles turned white gripping the receiver. “I’m hungry.” For a terrible second, she didn’t say anything. Then David’s voice boomed in the background. “Is that Maya? Tell her we miss her!” Mom lowered her voice to a harsh whisper. “I have to go.” “Please don’t hang up.” “Stop acting like a toddler.” “You left me all alone.” “You’re perfectly safe in your own house.” “I don’t feel safe.” “That is enough, Maya.” Click. I stood in the bathroom listening to the dead air. That was the very last time I cried while I was alone. At 2:17 that afternoon, the knocking started again. “Maya?” Sarah called out. “It’s Chloe’s mom. I came by this morning, but you didn’t answer the door.” I dropped to my knees behind the kitchen counter. “I’m not going to try and come inside,” she promised through the wood. “I just need to know if there is an adult in there with you.” I held my breath. The porch boards groaned. Then Sarah walked around the side of the house again. She looked through the kitchen window. And this time, she saw me curled into a ball behind the island. She also saw the heavy chair jammed under the front doorknob, the pathetic, almost-empty loaf of bread on the counter, and the butcher knife sitting on the coffee table. Her face completely fell. She didn’t bang on the glass. She just backed away, pulled out her cell phone, and dialed 911.
